Senior Services

Community Care Monitor:

This free service is available to any senior or disabled person who would like to have a safety check call every morning. Each day, beginning at 8:30 a.m., the person is called automatically by telephone with a recorded message "Are You OK?" Should the person fail to answer the phone, the computer makes two additional calls at 5 minute intervals. After the third attempt, the emergency contact is notified to determine if there is any reason the person is not answering the phone. If no reason can be determined, a police officer is sent to check on the well being of the person and carry out all necessary functions for their safety and well being. This program reassures the senior or disabled person and their families that should they become ill, someone will be aware of their inability to get to a phone for help. Lock Box Program:

The City of Bay Village is offering residents who subscribe to the Community Care Monitor or a Lifeline program a free lock box, which allows City emergency personnel quicker access to the home. The lock box eliminates the need for the resident to hide a key outside the home or to give a key to a neighbor. Emergency personnel will not have to break down doors or windows to gain access to the home.

For residents who are not on the Community Care Monitor or a Lifeline program but who have a medical condition which may require immediate medical assistance, lock boxes may be obtained for a $25.00 installation fee.

The lock box is placed in an inconspicuous location by the front door and is installed by the Fire Department. Only Police and Fire Department officers have access to the lock box. It is used only during an emergency call to the home when no one is able to answer the door. The lock box is tamper resistant.

Lock boxes are for emergency use only.

For more information about this program call the Community Services Department, 440-899-3409 or Fire Department at 440-871-1215.

Waldeck Trust Home Care:

Thanks to a bequest from W. Wayne Waldeck, the Joseph and Clara Waldeck Fund has been established to assist needy seniors (60 and over) with homemaker and home health care. Once service need and financial eligibility are assessed by the Community Services Department, the case is referred to a home health agency under contract with the City to provide the services. Since funds are limited, there is a maximum of six hours of service per week. Services might include assistance with bathing, change of bed linen, laundry, meal preparation, and light housekeeping. Payment for service is determined on a sliding scale. A single person household with a monthly income up to $1,920 would be financially eligible for some help paying for services. 440-899-3409.

Caregiver Referral:

The Community Services Department keeps a list of people who work as caregivers for children and adults. They work independently of an agency and receive no supervision from the City. People wishing to be interviewed to be included on the list should fill out an application and call the Department for a personal interview. People wishing to hire a caregiver may call for names. They should then interview the caregivers and check their references. 440-899-3409.
