Holiday Season Safety Tips from the Fire Department
Please keep the following tips in mind to keep this upcoming holiday season safe and free from fires.
DECORATIVE LIGHTING: Purchase lights that bear the UL label and use according to directions. Do not connect too many light sets together, and install light sets outside the home only if they are specifically labeled for outside use. Use appropriate hangers, not staples and use a ground fault interrupter circuit when possible. Use correct wattage replacement bulbs, replace light sets and extension cords that are worn or cracked.
Decorative candles should be secured and kept away from material that could easily ignite. CANDLES SHOULD BE EXTINGUISHED BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE OR GOING TO BED.
LIVE CHRISTMAS TREES:
Live trees should be as fresh as possible. Make a fresh cut at the base of the trunk and place in a sturdy stand. Place the tree as far away from heat sources as possible and water it daily. Do not block your primary or alternative escape routes. Select a fresh tree with flexible needles that are hard to pull off the branch. Inspect your lights sets for ware before putting them on the tree and do not overload electrical outlets or connect more than 3 light strands together. Turn off the lights when you leave home or go to bed.
If you have any questions regarding fire safety, please contact Lt. Christopher Lyons at the Bay Village Bureau of Fire Prevention & Safety, 871-3691 Community Diverson Program
