Automated Refuse and Recycling Program

Republic Services has provided blue refuse carts and green recycling carts to each home in Bay Village.  Containers remain the property of Republic Services and should not be removed from the residence.  (For more information please contact the Republic Services Customer Service Department at (440)458-5191 or (800)433-1309, office hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.) 

If your trash or recycling cart is not emptied, or the can is broken, missing a wheel, etc. please contact Republic Services at 800- 433-1309.


2017 Revised Trash/Recycling/Household Hazardous Waste Collection Schedule with new bulk pickup dates

Automated Refuse Truck

Time of Collection:  To ensure your recycling and Rubbish materials removal, please place your rubbish and recycling container at curb by 6:00 A.M.  Carts may be placed out on the tree lawn after 5 p.m. the day before pick up and must be removed by 7 a.m. the morning after per C.O. 521.12(B).

Day of Collection:  Recycling and rubbish materials will be picked up on Tuesday each week EXCEPT when a holiday falls on or before your regular pick up day. Then your recycling and rubbish materials will be collected on Wednesday.

Your Bulk Pickup day will be the 3rd TUESDAY of the first full week of the month EXCEPT when a holiday falls on or before your regular Bulk pickup day. Then your Bulk Pickup day will be on Wednesday.

HOLIDAYS THAT AFFECT COLLECTIONS ARE THE FOLLOWING:

New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

Container placement:  Place containers within 3 feet of the curb and 3 feet apart, with the arrows facing the street. Do not place carts near mailboxes, fixed objects, or in the street.

Note: Do not place containers at the curb prior to 5:00 P.M. on the day before collection. Please remove empty containers within 12 hours after collection.

During the winter months please place trash and recycle cans on the tree lawn or in your driveway only. In the event of snow cans placed in the street create a problem for city snow plows. Your cooperation is appreciated. 

 

PERMITTED REFUSE IN BLUE CARTS

Trash Cart

• Food Waste - drained, wrapped and placed in a plastic bag.

• Sharp items, broken glass, syringes, etc.  Place in puncture-proof container prior to   placing in cart.

Other trash - paper containers, waste paper, aluminum foil and foil pans, styrofoam, etc.

• Solidified latex paint

NOT PERMITTED AT CURB

• Large car parts, tires, batteries, etc.

• Liquids

• Extra bags or cans of trash except the last Tuesday of the month for Bulk pickup.

NOTE: Contractors are responsible for removal of building materials and debris.

• Refrigerators, freezers - DOORS REMOVED, FREON REMOVED

• Window AC Units and Dehumidifiers, FREON REMOVED

• Washers and dryers


In the event of an emergency, please contact the Service Department at (440) 871-1221 during their normal hours of operation (7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) to check availability for a one-time pickup of an appliance.


MONTHLY BULK DROPOFF AVAILABLE APRIL - SEPTEMBER

Once a month from April through September, we offer monthly Bulk Drop Off dates. The same items that can be put out for Bulk Pickup can now be brought out to the Service Garage, at 31300 Naigle Rd. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month between the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Only one can of construction debris permitted monthly per household. Contractors are not permitted to bring construction debris. No drop off permitted after hours. This is self-serve and items must be off-loaded by person dropping items off. Sign in at Service Dept. office prior to leaving your items.  For Bay Village residents only.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE - Everything must be in its original marked container - NO EXCEPTIONS AND NO LATEX PAINT

Latex paint can be put into the trash once it has been solidified. When the paint is dry, discard it with your regular trash. Leave the lid off so the waste collector can see the paint is hardened.

You can dry it out by removing the lid and letting it air dry, or by using a drying agent: cat litter. sawdust, plaster of Paris, Oil-Dri or "waste paint hardeners" found at home improvement stores.

  • Caustic household cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Oils and grease
  • Automotive fluids, motor oil, car batteries
  • Adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer
  • Kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid

Materials NOT accepted:

  • Latex paint
  • Explosives, gun powder, ammunition, flares
  • Medical waste, pharmaceuticals, medicine, sharps
  • Radioactive waste (smoke detectors)
  • Electronics, appliances
  • Business or commercial waste
  • Rechargeable batteries - Free nationwide program to recycle rechargeable batteries through Call2Recycle. Take your batteries to any Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's Home Improvement, or Radio Shack store in Cuyahoga County. Call 1-877-2-RECYCLE  to find a location near you.
  • Fluorescent bulbs - Residents can dispose of their compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) bulbs for free at any Home Depot and Lowes Home Improvement store. Flourescent tubes may be recycled at Batteries Plus Bulbs, 4607 Great Northern Blvd., North Olmsted (440) 379-0257. There is a minimal charge to recycle bubls here.

 

Recycling Collection Rules & Regulations

A GREEN 65 GALLON CART HAS BEEN PROVIDED FOR ALL YOUR RECYCLABLE MATERIALS.

Republic Services provides weekly curbside recycling for city residents. Combine cans, cartons, glass, paper and boxes plus plastic bottles loose (unbagged) in the provided green recycling cart.


Combine these items in your curbside recycling:Recycle cart

       CANS: Includes all metal food and beverage cans such as pop, beer, soup, vegetable, and tuna. Cans should be emptied, rinsed, and then recycled.

·      CARTONS: Includes milk, juice, soup and broth plus wine cartons. Cartons should be emptied and rinsed. Replace the cap and place in your curbside recycling.

·      GLASS: Includes glass food and beverage bottles and jars. Empty, rinse and replace the lid before recycling. You do not need to remove the label

PAPER & BOXES: All paper and boxes can be recycled, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, boxes, greeting cards, cereal boxes, cardboard, phone books and clean pizza boxes. Flatten cardboard items, like cereal boxes, to save space.

·     PLASTIC BOTTLES: Any plastic bottle, jar, jug or tub can be placed in your curbside recycling. Recycle plastic food and beverage bottles, cosmetics and personal products, and laundry detergent and bleach bottles. Containers should be emptied and rinsed. Replace the cap and put in your curbside recycling.

Not all plastics with the 1-7 symbol are recyclable. See the chart below.

Recycling - plastics yes or no?

ITEMS EXCLUDED FROM RECYCLING COLLECTIONS:

Window glass, light bulbs, drinking glasses, mirrors or ceramics and empty plastic containers that had contained motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides and herbicides, aluminum foil or pie tins, etc., styrofoam, scrap metal, batteries, chains, car parts, pots & pans, knives, etc. Place above items and empty containers in trash container.

NOTE: Do not jam items into cart or overstuff container. "OR PLACE ANY YARD WASTE OF ANY KIND INTO RECYCLING CART".

SIMPLE RECYCLING Simple Recycling

Place the bright green bags supplied by Simple Recycling (sent to resident's homes) or place the bright green sticker on a bag or items to be recycled. Place these items out at the curb with your trash and recycling carts and they will be picked up by Simple Recycling on the regular collection day. Extra bags are available at City Hall, 350 Dover Center Rd. and the Bay Village Service garage, 31300 Naigle Rd.

What can be recycled? The primary focus is on clothing and other textiles -- blankets, sheets, drapes and towels, for example. But usable household items like small furniture and appliances, pots and pans, dishes, lamps and microwaves also are accepted. You can see the full list on Simple Recycling's website.

Yard Waste Rules and Regulations

Yard Waste collection will resume April11, 2017. Last day for Yard Waste collection is Tuesday, December 5, 2017. After December 5, place Yard Waste in the blue trash container for weekly pickup, or in large plastic garbage bags and place it out on Bulk Pickup days only.

Yard Waste stickers are available for $2 each at the City Hall reception desk.


Christmas trees will be collected beginning the first week in January.

GRASS CLIPPINGS AND OTHER YARD WASTE TO BE SENT TO THE COMPOSTING FACILITY:

All grass clippings and other yard waste to be composted should be placed in brown paper yard waste bags not to exceed 50 lbs. Grass clippings and yard waste may also be placed loose in 32 gallon plastic containers marked yard waste.  ("Yard Waste Only" stickers are available for purchase at City Hall for $2.00)

DO NOT PUT YARD WASTE OUT IN PLASTIC BAGS OR PLACE YARD WASTE IN THE RECYCLING CONTAINER.

BRUSH AND SMALL TREE TRIMMINGS

Must be cut, bundled and securely tied not exceeding 4 feet in length or 50 lbs.

Note: Landscapers and tree services are responsible for removal of any  yard waste they generate while working at a residence. The City brush crew will pick up brush piles as they work their way through the city. Pickup may take several days.
